Spontaneous combustion remains a significant safety and environmental risk in abandoned stockpiles, spoil heaps, and post mining deposits containing reactive carbonaceous materials. Spontaneous combustion of coal spoil heaps and post‑mining waste dumps represents a persistent environmental and safety challenge in many European coal regions.
